The Victorians faced death much earlier than we do today. Infantile death was prevalent and Queen Victoria mourned the loss of Albert for the rest of her life. Black armbands and diamonds were displayed on clothing and mourning stationery was used to convey messages and indicate the loss. Different envelope bands indicated the depth of mourning. Illustrated, is a typical Victorian cover bearing SG43 1d red stamp. Price per cover £4.00; 2 different types £7.75.
